MaterialStories

An exhibition of five material narratives

Material Stories

Five Materials. Five Stories. Infinite Possibilities.

An exploration of how surfaces shape the spaces we inhabit and the stories we live.

The assignment

Beyond the Surface

The challenge was simple: transform a tile display into an experience.

Rather than presenting materials as isolated products, the idea was to give each collection a personality, something customers could recognise, remember and imagine in their own spaces.

The design challenge

From Material Selection to Material Experience

  1. 01

How can a tile communicate an emotion?

  2. 02

How can one material transform different spaces?

  3. 03

How can physical displays help customers make faster, more confident design choices?

The approach

A Story Behind Every Surface

  1. Stack of glossy aqua-mint kitkat tiles showing tonal variation between pieces

    01 /

    Discover

Study the product's texture, form, colour, scale, finish and use cases.

Example — 01 Tidal Ritual · Raw material: the kitkat tile

  2. Flat-lay of aqua fluted ceramic, green onyx-look stone, chalk-white and sage tiles

    02 /

    Interpret

Define an emotional and architectural direction for the material.

Example — 01 Tidal Ritual · Direction: a coastal material family

  3. Spa-inspired bathroom with a vertical aqua kitkat tile wall, stone vanity and brass fittings

    03 /

    Visualize

Present the selected tile through realistic applications, close-up material details and complementary finishes.

Example — 01 Tidal Ritual · Application: the spa bathroom

  4. Original Figma board 01 — Tidal Ritual

    04 /

    Translate

Adapt the visual narrative into a showroom display and an interactive digital experience.

Example — 01 Tidal Ritual · Outcome: the finished board

  1. 01

    Consistent editorial structure

A shared typography system, white canvas, predictable image hierarchy and aligned margins create cohesion across all five collections.

  2. 02

    Colour-coded navigation

Five palettes give each collection a recognisable visual signature, helping distinguish physical displays in a showroom.

  3. 03

    Lifestyle-first storytelling

The large room image shows how a material feels in context, rather than presenting a tile sample with no application.

  4. 04

    Material credibility

The original product reference, tile detail crops, dimensions and complementary finishes connect emotional storytelling to a real selection process.

  5. 05

    Physical and digital continuity

The same visual identity translates between printed design concepts and responsive web experiences, as this site demonstrates.

The physical display concept

Designed to Be Seen. Created to Be Remembered.

The original brief called for a 4 ft × 8 ft showroom display. These stories were designed to work at that distance.

Colour coding makes each collection recognisable from across the floor. A consistent editorial system lets customers scan several displays quickly. Large application visuals communicate the mood, while samples and complementary materials explain what creates it.

Proposed physical installation

A conceptual elevation, not production-ready artwork. Each panel is re-composed for the display rather than enlarged from the web or print page.

2 : 3 page → 1 : 2 surface

The supplied editorial pages are 2:3. The display surface is 1:2, so the layout is rebalanced and never stretched.

Display ≠ tile size

The 4 × 8 ft panel is a mounting surface. The products themselves range from 300 × 100 mm kitkat tiles to 1200 × 600 mm slabs, and real samples would be fixed to the panel at their true size.
